The schedule for the work on the dam appears to be slipping. The original plan was for the Department of Conservation and Recreation (the Commonwealth agency responsible for the dam contract) to start the bid process on October 1, 2014 with contract award on December 1. Due to some necessary work on construction easements, DCR has not yet advertised for bids. (They have identified and pre-qualified a set of construction companies.)
The Resort has a meeting scheduled with DCR next week and hopes to receive more definitive information regarding the schedule at that time.
In any event, the last stated plan remains in effect: the Resort plans to perform the normal winter draw down of Lake Laura right after the Civilian Military Combine on October 18, 2014. This draw down will leave the shallow end exposed so that that vegetation will die off. The Resort plans to leave Lake Laura at this lower level until the start of the complete draw down. Once the Resort knows when the dam contractor will start work, they will schedule a full draw down starting about 6 weeks before “first shovel.”
So, while we are all very interested in knowing if the Lake will be impacted this summer, until the DCR has awarded the contract for the work and the contractor has specified a start date, we just don’t know what will happen and when.
As we get more information from the Resort and/or DCR, we will post updates on this page.
