Status of Lake Laura Dam Reconstruction Work

9/16/2014

It’s time for an update on the status of the Lake Laura reconstruction dam work and its impact on the lake.

At a meeting last week with the resort, the Lord Fairfax Soil and Water Conservation District and the Commonwealth updated their schedule for the dam work. Their latest schedule calls for contract award for the work around December 1 with a 12 month completion schedule. Bryce Resort and the LFSWCD both hope/expect that work will begin in December.

With this information in hand, the Resort now plans to perform the normal winter draw down of Lake Laura right after the Civilian Military Combine on October 18, 2014. This draw down will leave the shallow end exposed so that that vegetation will die off. (This winter draw down is included in the Lake Laura Management Plan as a vegetation control strategy.) The resort plans to leave Lake Laura at this lower level until the start of the complete draw down.

Once the contractor has notified the Resort (and the LFSWCD) of their start date for construction activity, the Resort will schedule the start of the complete draw down. Since contract award is not until December 1, the draining process will not start until at least that date.

As we get more information from the Resort and/or LFSWCD, we will post updates on this page.
